East Tamaki Childcare Centre aims to provide quality early education and care in a welcoming and friendly environment where children, their families and whanau are respected and valued in their contributions. We acknowledge the bicultural heritage and cultural diversity of
New Zealand in our programme.
In our learning environment, we believe every child is unique, created by God with potential and purpose, and deserves to be treated with love, care, respect and dignity. Therefore, our planning for each child emerges out of their interests and learning development. We in providing opportunities for children to explore their environment and resources through trial and error by themselves or with others. Through these opportunities children learn to problem solve, develop confidence to take risks and learn from their mistakes.
Children are encouraged in the development of their self-care and self-help skills to support them to become independent. We provide tuakana-teina opportunities for children in our programme where older children are encouraged to support the young ones and build long lasting friendships.
Whanaungatanga is important to us, so we acknowledge parents and whᾱnau as the first teacher of their child, and we want to collaborate with them in decision making, providing regular feedback and encouraging them to be actively involved in contributing to their children’s planning and learning portfolio.
Our philosophy is inspired by Te Whaariki Curriculum and we reflect in our programme theories such as Urie Bronfenbrenner, Lev Vygotsky, Erik Erikson, Mason Durie and Jean Piaget. These early learning theories and approaches will help teachers provide relevant planning that caters for children’s holistic development in a secure, safe and loving environment.
